It was a privilege to work with this gentleman and KATQ was blessed for the many years he was our sportscaster, we have many memories to cherish.
Go Rest High On That Mountain Jim, from all of us at the “Q”
Jim knew from a very young age that he was drawn towards sportscasting and would practice on the cows when he and a sibling would round them up on the family farm. He had a unique way of making young athletes feel a vital part of their perspective team and play their very best. His vocabulary choices made him stand out among sportscasters. When KATQ went online with the high school games we would laughingly joke that he was now heard around the world, from the Arctic to the Antarctica and even the astronauts in the space station now were enjoying the games from Sheridan County.
Jim was always a professional when he was announcing. It always impressed board operators behind the scenes how Jim made an effort to get names correct, make sure the correct scores were announced, and the support he always showed for the individual players that transcended the team atmosphere.
He hosted a program on KATQ titled Coaches Corner for several years and every Saturday listeners could look forward to his interviews with coaches and players from a variety of sports state wide and occasionally nationwide. He covered volley ball , foot ball and basketball games for 5 schools: Plentywood Wildcats, Westby- Grenora MonDak, and the Medicine Lake – Froid Red Hawks during the High School season and for many years was a sportscaster for summer baseball games. He was a popular speaker for graduation services, National Honor Society and other occasions. Jim was always encouraging with his words of advice to students to be the best versions of themselves. He was considered a mentor and role model.
